University of Cyprus aims to establish itself as a Pioneer Research Institution achieving International Scientific Recognition in European Higher Education, offering Competitive Programmes and to become a Centre of Excellence in the wider Euro - Mediterranean Region.
The programme is run by members of the twoDepartments in the following fields of specialization:Byzantine Language and Literature, Byzantine History,Medieval History, Byzantine and Post–Byzantine Art andArchaeology. Moreover, seminars may be offered bymembers of the University’s Academic Staff in relatedfields (e.g., Ancient History, Classical Philology, Ottomanand Islamic Studies, Theory of Literature, HistoricalLinguistics) or by visiting professors.In order to ensure that the students become acquaintedwith the full range of the three fields and the variousmethodological approaches involved, the seminarsoffered in the programme are organized in five thematicmodules.These are not only related to different aspects ofByzantine culture, butthey also allow forthe combinationof allthe fields and methods mentioned above: (a) EditorialTechniques and Auxiliary Disciplines; (b) Theory andAesthetics; (c) State and Society; (d) Culture and Ideology;(e) Byzantine and Medieval Cyprus.

2. Documentary evidence of academic performance,
including official degree transcripts and a detailed list
of the coursestaken at the undergraduate level. B.A. in
Byzantine Philology, History, Archaeology, History of
Art, Classical Studies or another related field required
(First or Upper Second Class).
3. Brief Curriculum Vitae and statement of academic and
research interests.
4. Sample of written work, namely an essay on a topic of
the candidate’s choice in Byzantine Literature, History,
Archaeology, History of Art, Classical Studies or
another related field.
5. Two letters of recommendation from specialists,
preferably university faculty or other established
scholars.

The Department of Byzantine and Modern
Greek Studies and the Department of History
and Archaeology offer a jointspecialised
postgraduate programme in Byzantine
Studiesleading to an M.A. and/or Ph.D.
degree.
The goal of the programme isto promote
interdisciplinary approachesin the various
fields of Byzantine Studies. More specifically,
the programme aims at a multilevel and
multifaceted study of Byzantine culture that
combinesthe varioustheoretical and
practical methodological tools of Philology,
History, History of Art and Archaeology. In
this way, the historical phenomenon
“Byzantium” isfirmly placed within the
broader geographical framework of Medieval
Europe and the Middle East.
6. In addition to Greek, satisfactory knowledge of two
other languagesfrom the remaining five international
languages of Byzantine Studies (English, French,
German, Italian and Russian). Submission of the related
certificates (e.g., GCE A level or TOEFL for English, Delf
2–4 for French, Mittelstufe for German, etc.) isrequired.
7. If deemed necessary by the faculty of the M.A.
programme, the candidate may be invited to an
interview.
