Sociology is the science that analyses, causally andinterpretively, the social aspects of human existence. Socialaction and, more generally, the social construction of realityare examined in the context of particular social formations,such as class, the family, ethnic and religious group. Thesociologist focuses upon the processes of production,reproduction and evolution of society’s fundamentalstructures and institutions. Sociology, more than any otherscience, studies the behavioural and ideological changesassociated with the passing of traditional society. A moreperceptive and critical understanding of modernityconstitutes the sociologist’s basic aim. The students of theprogramme are familiarized with sociological theory,methodology and the main research areas, acquiringskills that will enable them to achieve a systematicunderstanding of contemporary Cypriot society, as well asto compare it with other societies, modern or historical.
